The US Treasury sanctioned Russian nationals Ilya Aleksandrovich Boykov and Vitold Viktorovich Obertas plus multiple North Korean entities for laundering cryptocurrency earned by Pyongyang's IT workers based in Russia, who fraudulently hold US remote-work roles to fund the regime. Obertas is accused of laundering at least $3.5 million in crypto since January 2025 on behalf of Amnokgang, a North Korean shell company sanctioned in March; Boykov likewise converted roughly $3.5 million since 2024 and supported sanctioned firm Alis. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Pyongyang "continues targeting and exploiting American companies", weaponising stolen data and extorting payment. The action deepens the international response to DPRK IT-worker fraud and reinforces a compliance pattern Australian employers should apply to remote-hiring due diligence: identity-verification of overseas contractors is now an active sanctions-risk control, not merely a fraud control.
