The US Department of Justice has announced court-authorised seizure of domains associated with NightmareStresser, a DDoS-for-hire "booter" service, as part of the long-running Operation PowerOFF. The FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police seized nightmare-stresser[.]com and nightmarestresser[.]org under warrants issued by the District of Alaska, and visitors now see a law-enforcement seizure banner. NightmareStresser is assessed to have launched hundreds of thousands of actual or attempted DDoS attacks since 2022 against educational institutions, government agencies, gaming platforms and individuals; a late-2023 Searchlight Cyber report put it at more than 566,000 registered users and 52 servers. The service advertised Layer 4 amplification and Layer 7 bypasses, cryptocurrency payment and a referral program. The takedown extends a series of actions that have charged twelve defendants and seized more than 100 domains linked to DDoS-for-hire services. The platform's own now-taken-down site boasted of running "non-stop for over 8 years" and never going down β a claim the seizure directly undercuts.
