Google Cloud's europe-west2 (London) region suffered a "power event" shortly before midday UK time on 20 October, knocking out services in the europe-west2-b zone and taking down online banking for HSBC, Lloyds and Bank of Scotland customers while Revolut's app flagged 28 services — sign-ins, card payments, transfers, currency exchange, stock trading and live support chat — as partially unavailable. Revolut said all customer money and data were safe and that work on the fault had been under way since the morning, with thousands of UK and Ireland users reporting problems to Downdetector. Google said the power event itself was mitigated, with infrastructure services to follow within 30 minutes. No malicious activity has been alleged; the sector significance is concentration risk, the exposure UK and EU regulators including the Bank of England and FCA have repeatedly flagged as a handful of hyperscalers come to underpin retail banking — a single-zone failure becomes an operational-resilience event for dozens of institutions at once.
