Europol and the US Justice Department announced on 1 October that authorities arrested three alleged members of the KillSec data-extortion group on 30 September and seized its infrastructure. The alleged leader is 16 years old; Europol says a suspected developer committed his crimes before turning 18 in August. The group compromised roughly 500 organisations since 2024 by exploiting defects in victims' systems or cloud infrastructure and stealing data for extortion. Officials seized the group's data-leak site, domains and five central servers holding at least 110 terabytes of data, including records of the group's criminal proceeds, and searched eight residences in Spain, Greece, the United Kingdom and Romania. Alleged negotiator Fouad Eltibrizi, a Dutch national indicted in Puerto Rico for unauthorised computer access conspiracy carrying up to 10 years, was arrested in the UK on 30 September and awaits extradition to the United States.
